About the Department

[vc_row][vc_column][ultimate_heading main_heading=”About the Department” alignment=”left” main_heading_style=”font-weight:bold;”][/ultimate_heading][vc_empty_space height=”22px”][vc_column_text]The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care was part of Surgery Department until 1984 when it became a full-fledged department. The Department had a humble beginning, not able to employ the services of full time lecturer/physician Anaesthetist until 1999. Since then, there has been active training in Anaesthesia towards addressing the issue of shortage in anaesthesia and critical care manpower. The department was accredited for Postgraduate training in 2001. The Department has trained staff who are presently working in Obafemi Awolowo University and other universities as well as tertiary health facilities across Nigeria and beyond. The Departmental Office is in the second floor of Block Y, College of Health Sciences building complex.

The aim of the department is to train health Care personnel who can work as a team in providing comprehensive Anaesthetic services for Perioperative care, Pain management, Intensive Care services and Palliative care.

The Department currently has six academic/consultant staff, and two non-academic consultants, 14 postgraduate Resident Doctors at various stages of their postgraduate Diploma and Fellowship training Programme in Anaesthesia, 13 Nurse Anaesthetists and 13 Anaesthesia Assistance. The Department also receive several doctors from other departments within the hospital and other institutions who rotate through the Department for clinical exposure.

  4. Maxillo-Facial Surgery
  5. Oto-Rhino-Laryngology (E.N.T.) operation
  6. Urological procedures including kidney transplant.
  7. Paediatric surgery
  8. Ophthalmic Surgery
  9. Neurosurgery
  10. Cardiothoracic surgery including closed and open-heart surgeries
  11. Obstetric and Gynaecological Surgery
  12. Plastic surgery
  13. Investigative Radiology
  14. Trauma and Resuscitation
  15. Electroconvulsive therapy
  16. Critically ill patient in Intensive Care
  17. Providing pain relieve care for patients
  18. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Services and Training.
